Reform UK has won its first seat in Salford in the Barton and Winton by-election.
Six candidates were standing for the seat in the ward, with the result being declared at around 12.15am on Thursday following voting on Wednesday.
There were 1,941 votes cast in the by-election, a turnout of 17.82 per cent.
Following a recount, Reform’s Michael James Felse was declared the winner with 676 votes, with Labour’s Catherine Goodyer just 33 votes behind on 643.
Mr Felse said he had made history and expected further success for his party in Salford.
Labour still has overall control of the council, with 45 of the seats currently occupied by the party’s councillors.
The controversial by-election – which comes just under two weeks before Barton and Winton residents head to the polls again to take part in the May 7 Local Elections – was called to elect a new councillor following the death of England’s longest serving councillor David Lancaster.
