GB News came to an abrupt halt as Ellie Costello delivered some “breaking news”. The presenter, 31, joined Eamonn Holmes, 65, on Monday’s (May 19) instalment of GB News Breakfast, sharing the top headlines of the day with viewers. As Ellie prepared to update fans with the latest news, she received word that a migrant had died after attempting to cross the Channel. The newsreader said: “Some breaking news coming to us now. One person has died after a boat carrying migrants got into difficulties in the Channel. That’s according to French authorities.”
She added: “It comes as Keir Starmer gears up for that crucial EU summit later on today.” It comes after The Refugee Council urged Sir Keir Starmer to press EU leaders to accept the return of illegal migrants who initially sought asylum within Europe, believing Monday’s London summit is “an important opportunity” to cut down Channel crossings. A record number of migrants have crossed in small boats this year, heaping more pressure on Britain’s failing asylum system.

Despite persistent pressure, the EU has rebuffed discussions with the UK regarding a specialised agreement for returning migrants. Many migrants waiting in France to cross the Channel have also applied for asylum in countries such as France, Germany and Belgium.
But when they are refused, they move on and try to reach Britain. Conversations between the UK and France are ongoing concerning a “one-for-one” pact that would enable asylum seekers to reunite with family members already residing in the UK.
In return, illegal migrants who have successfully navigated the Channel will be returned to France.

The tally of arrivals this year is nearing 13,000 – marking a 40% increase from 2024.
The escalating figures pose a serious challenge to Labour’s strategy to “smash the gangs”.
Underlining the urgency of the situation, Mr Farage said: “5 years ago today, I went out into the Channel, exposed the French Navy handovers and predicted a huge wave of illegal migrants.
“Now we learn that terrorists are using this route, and our country faces serious threats. No one in the Tory or Labour parties believed me.”
