“Part-time” Nicola Sturgeon has been accused of putting herself before her constituents after it was revealed she earned more from her second jobs than as a backbench Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP). The 54-year-old provided an update in her register of interest, declaring an income of £182,500 since she left her role as leader of the government two years ago.
The former First Minister collected around £145,000 from her role as an MSP for Glasgow Southside over the same period despite a few rare appearances in parliament. Ms Sturgeon updated her register to include the second instalment for her memoir, Frankly, which added a further £76,500 to her total. This is on top of the £75,000 she has already received for her 464-page book, which is due to be released in August. The Scottish Daily Express reports, the register now states: “On 21 March 2025 my company Nicola Sturgeon Ltd received a payment of £76,500 made via my literary agent. This represents the second of four instalments of a book advance from Pan Macmillan of £75,000 (plus VAT and minus agent commission).”

The former SNP leader pocketed £25,000 for her role as a pundit on ITV’s general election coverage. She is also holding various meet and greet events to promote her book, which is £75 a ticket for fans in Aberdeen and Edinburgh this autumn.
The former First Minister already collects a basic MSP salary of £74,507 and received a £65,378 for “loss of office” after she quit as leader of the Scottish Government. She is expected to receive a ‘resettlement grant’ of around £75,000 when she stands down next year as an MSP after 27 years in the role.
Glasgow Conservative MSP Annie Wells said: “Since resigning as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has become a part-time MSP rather than properly representing Glasgow Southside.
“It will stick in the throats of her constituents that she is continuing to coin it in for her work away from Holyrood at a time when they are facing huge challenges.

“Since leaving Bute House it is clear the former First Minister has been more interested in writing her memoirs and touring the festival circuit than turning up to parliament. Nicola Sturgeon should be upfront about where her priorities lie given she doesn’t seem interested in raising issues facing Glasgow Southside any more.” Ms Sturgeon’s earnings from a recent appearance at the Glasgow Comedy Festival have yet to appear in her register.”

A spokesperson for Ms Sturgeon told the Daily Mail: “As opposed to uselessly shouting from the sidelines like the Tories, Nicola is continuing to be an active MSP for the people she represents – as she has done since 1999 – holding regular surgeries, meeting with constituents and engaging widely.”
Accounts filed this week in her accounts as of September 30 last year had assets of £33,290 and liabilities £12,068, making net assets of £21,222.
