Es war lediglich ein altes Foto von Propo Katus, bis Forscher die darin enthaltene Botschaft entschlüsselten. Das Foto tauchte im Herbst 2019 im Archiv der Virginia Historical Society auf. Es war Jahre zuvor als Teil einer größeren Sammlung von Erinnerungsstücken aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gespendet worden und schlicht als „Militärgruppenporträt Camp Lee, Virginia, 1943“ katalogisiert.
